Additional The Seeker's Guide (previously published as The New American Spirituality) Information

Formerly published as "The New American Spirituality : A Seeker's Guide".

In 1977, Elizabeth Lesser cofounded the Omega Institute, now America's largest adult-education center focusing on wellness and spirituality. Working with many of the eminent thinkers of our times, including Zen masters, rabbis, Christian monks, psychologists, scientists, and an array of noted American figures--from L.A. Lakers coach Phil Jackson to author Maya Angelou--Lesser found that by combining a variety of religious, psychological, and healing traditions, each of us has the unique ability to satisfy our spiritual hunger.

In The Seeker's Guide, she synthesizes the lessons learned from an immersion into the world's wisdom traditions and intertwines them with illuminating stories from her daily life. Recounting her own trials and errors and offering meditative exercises, she shows the reader how to create a personal practice, gauge one's progress, and choose effective spiritual teachers and habits. Warm, accessible, and wise, this book provides directions through the four landscapes of the spiritual journey:

THE MIND: learning meditation to ease stress and anxiety
THE HEART: dealing with grief, loss, and pain; opening the heart and becoming fully alive
THE BODY: returning the body to the spiritual fold to heal and overcome the fear of aging and death
THE SOUL: experiencing daily life as an adventure of meaning and mystery

What Customers Say About The Seeker's Guide (previously published as The New American Spirituality):

This book is worth the time it takes to really learn a new way of thinking or support and push your thoughts ahead.

This is simply the best overview book of dealing with deeper needs of our human souls. No matter what spiritual background you may be coming from you will find her to be a gracious and very wise host for your own spiritual journey. It seems that there is something of great wisdom on every page, so much to ponder that one never really completes reading the book, but reading it over and over again. And this is not a another self help book of fluff, but one that will challenge you on deeper levels where it really counts.

Great book, great author. It gave me a lot of insight, I actuall want to read it again, I am sure I will again find a lot of new insights. Highly recommend it for those who are looking for a lift of heart and soul.

The author makes some great points about spirituality in America today. However, the "seeker" wil find that meditation is the primary guidance the author presents.

This book really is a seeker's guide. I bought a copy of this book for a friend of mine who has been going through some difficult times both psychologically and circumstantially, and who is new to spirituality, questioning, and just trying to be herself. It is like a spiritual toolbox, and can be especially helpful to those who are just beginning to step out on the religious/spiritual path and/or the path to greater psychological wholeness. The author touches upon many themes and offers not just mystical or speculative insights, but really sound, pragmatic advice. She has almost finished reading it through and has found it very helpful and challenging. I recommend it to anyone interested and especially to those who are new to the subject.
